The women’s issue in Iran has remained relevant since the anti-Shah movement on the eve of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, in which women played an active role. During the period of rapid Westernization, they fought to preserve national culture, including the right to wear the hijab. In 2022, a large-scale protest movement emerged in the Islamic Republic of Iran, with young women as its main driving force, advocating for the right to freely decide whether to wear the hijab. In this short essay, the author attempts to present a general overview of this movement and analyze the reactions to it from both the West and Iranian official circles.
