Strategic Partnership Between Russia and Iran

Abstract

This article examines the main provisions of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation, dated January 17, 2015, and explores the strategic implications of this agreement, indicating a new era of bilateral relations. The document signed by Presidents Putin and Pezeshkian, establishes a twenty-year framework of cooperation in various areas, including security, defence, economy, energy and regional stability. The research methodology includes a qualitative analysis of provisions of the Agreement and their conformity with agreements of other countries and Russia. The study includes geopolitical, economic and security assessment to determine potential impact of treaty and its consequences. The findings show that treaty creates solid legal foundation for cooperation, enhances military-technical collaboration, promotes development of trade-economic partnership and strengthens principles of non-interference. Considerable emphasis was placed on energy projects including oil, gas and nuclear ventures, as well development of international North-South transportation corridor. Additionally, agreement defines mechanisms for counteracting unilateral sanctions and promoting multipolar international management. Treaty represents strategic shift in Eurasian geopolitics positioning Iran and Russia as key allies for regional security and integration.
