The political crisis in Israel and the war in the Gaza Strip that began on October 7, 2023 have returned to the socio-political agenda the issue of the nature and content of relations with the United States, which to one degree or another ensure the functioning of Israel, especially in conditions of acute military-political crises. The tense relationship between the Biden administration and the far-right religious-nationalist coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not just a result of personal animosity between the two leaders. They are a manifestation in the Israeli political mainstream of a trend that is caused by the gradual awareness of the Israeli political elite that achieving national interests is impossible in dependence on an external player as the United States, even if it is considered the “main strategic ally”.
The difficulties of the Israeli political leadership in making sovereign decisions on key policy areas, on the one hand, are associated with the objective long-standing dependent position of the Jewish state on the United States in the military-political and other spheres, on the other hand, they aggravate its position in the region and in the international arena and impede a solution strategic tasks against the background of the weakening of America, the gradual loss of its former status and the degradation of its image as a leading world power. The United States is increasingly becoming an obstacle for Israel, including normalisation with its Arab neighbors.
